The population of Middle Farms Limbe, were in pandemonium on Tuesday the 29th December 2020, after a chimpanzee scaled the fence of the Limbe Zoo. The Chimp first of all jumped on the road towards the Limbe City Council to the bewilderment of the population. From the City Council, it skipped from fence to fence towards the Delegation of Communication, Fako in Middle Farms. The chimpanzee aroused fear amongst onlookers as it chased anybody who dared come closer. It even attempted to drag a passenger from a motorbike, thanks to the shrewd rider who escaped to the other side of the road.

From the Fako Communication Delegation, the Chimpanzee made a u-turn towards Crystal Garden to a car wash spot in the area. The car wash had a mini restaurant with a regular menu of achu and pepper soup.

According to James Fah, a worker at the car wash, immediately the chimpanzee saw flasks of food, it jumped and open the flasks and ate achu and dry meat to his satisfaction. Fah said the chimpanzee ate a smaller quantity of the pepper soup, before emptying all the bottles of left over beer abandoned by people running from the claws of the Chimp. He narrated that the unsatisfied chimpanzee reached at the counter and drank almost all the beer there.

The car wash staff said the chimp also ate a bucket of puff-puff at the restaurant, boiled eggs and other candies on sale.

He further explained that veterinarians from the zoo had trailed the chimpanzee, cautioning the public on safety measures and also struggling to administer anesthesia on the animal. According to Fah, when the chimpanzee loose concentration after drinking a good quantity of beer at the restau, the veterinarians shot the animal on the back using a gun loaded with anesthesia. He said for close to ten minutes, the chimpanzee staggered at the balcony of the restau, skipped to the floor and slept.

He said the veterinarians paid the restaurant owner for the food and drinks consumed by the chimpanzee before carrying the animal to the zoo. Traffic was restored and calm returned to Middle Farms immediately the chimpanzee was taken away.

In a chat with the Conservator of the Limbe Zoo, Mr. Mbelle Serge Rim, he said they are doing all to ensure that animals don’t scale the fence of the zoo again. He said the chimp might have loved eating achu because the spices used in preparing achu is the same which is being used to prepare their food.
