Mbowoh Elvis Installed ELECAM NW Regional Delegate As SDF Wants Decentralized Polling Centres

Story By Ndi Tsembom Elvis

41-year-old Mbowoh Elvis, native of Lebialem Division and holder of a Master’s Degree in Comparative politics from the University of Buea has been installed as the new North West Regional Delegate of Elections Cameroon, ELECAM.

The installation ceremony that took place at the Bamenda Ayaba Hotel was conducted by the Director General of Elections, Dr Erik Essousse Thursday 14th February 2024.

While installing the incoming Delegate, Dr Erik Essousse challenged him to continue from the works of his predecessor who was able to mobilize 18,166 new voters in 2023.

He was challenged to work in the footsteps of his predecessor to ensure a favourable climate between the election’s stakeholders, the administration and the judicial authorities.

Dr Essousse appreciated the fact that the incoming personality had risen through the ranks of Elections Cameroon and thus deserves this confidence.

A confidence which the Bamenda City Mayor, Achobong Tambeng Paul says should breathe some fresh air in the electoral process as you cannot win an election except on the ballot box.

"For those wishing to take power, the only access is the ballot box. No other access is authorized." The city Mayor said.

He went further to congratulate the outgoing Delegate, Zofoa Njoya Nsake who played a magnificent role in the just concluded elections in the North West Region, spanning from the council branches to the region level.

With optimism, Mbowoh Elvis pledged to take the task assigned to him seriously and will continue to consult all the stakeholders to make the best out of the electoral process.

Mbowoh Elvis is charged with the opening of the Regional registers, improved dialogue between and amongst colleagues and others. He will also ensure that elections in the region should be conducted hitch free.

The installation ceremony was witnessed by the Governor of the North West Region, Judicial authorities and leaders of political parties.

SDF Calls for delocalization of polling centers

The Regional chairman of the SDF, Mayor Fonguh Cletus Tanwie has called on the incoming Regional Delegate of ELECAM to ensure that all polling stations are functional. He seriously condemned the idea of polling centers.

"People should be able to vote at their polling stations. They should not trek several distances just to vote. This is the reason why we had low voter turnout during the last Presidential and twin elections."

Quizzed as to how this can be achieved with the prevailing insecurity, Mayor Fonguh Cletus said ELECAM has the strength to mobilize enough security elements to protect the various polling stations.

"Permit me to state clearly that polling centers are illegal and do not fall under any provisions of the electoral code." Mayor Fonguh said.

Mbowoh Elvis will be charged with organising the 2025 Presidential elections and the 2025 Municipal and Legislative elections.
