Renewed Search For Ndop-Based Liquor Dealer Launched

By Eyong Tiku

Security forces in the Northwest Region of Cameroon have reportedly launched a fresh search for Ndop-based liquor dealer, Francis Ngestia, who has been on the run for some time.
According to sources, Francis’s wife was interrogated, arrested, and detained alongside his child to provide information on his whereabouts.
Francis Ngestia  has been entangled in trouble with both security officers and separatist fighters for a while.
His business involved importing liquor from Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea to trade in Ndop, and it was flourishing.
All was going well until July 5, when he was arrested at the Bamunka-Ndop Market, manhandled, and accused of trading arms with separatist fighters.
Francis was also accused of holding huge sums of money in his accounts, which security officers suspected were proceeds from illegal activities.
We gather that after explaining his source of income to security officers, he was released on July 20 on bail, with the possibility of being called in again for questioning.
Matters did not end there.
On July 25, Francis was kidnapped by separatist fighters and taken to an undisclosed location.
Close friends say he was accused of revealing the fighters’ hideouts during his stay in detention.
According to sources, after explaining that he had no idea of their location, he was warned and released.
The recent arrest and questioning of his wife indicates that security operatives are still interested in the allegations against him, though he has denied them.
Francis Ngestia, like many others suspected of having any dealings with separatist fighters, will be charged under the dreaded anti-terrorism law if arrested.
The law places civilians before a military tribunal, and most cases end with jail sentences of 15 to 25 years, and in some cases, life imprisonment.
The law has been described by many human rights organizations as inhumane, and they have called for its revision.
