COVID -19 Fight: CHRDA Targets IDPs, Pregnant Women, Nursing Mothers
The Center
for Human Rights and Development in Africa CHRDA, has reached out to Internally
Displaced Persons, Pregnant Women and Breastfeeding Mothers in Bakingili in ldenau
Subdivision.
This was
during a donation and sensitization campaign against COVID- 19 that took place
at the Bakingili Community Hall on Saturday April 25, 2020.
During the
ceremony that was presided at by the Chief of Bakingili, HRH Chief Joseph Elive,
the population of Bakingili especially internally Displaced Persons, Pregnant
Women and Breastfeeding Mothers were being sensitized on the importance of the
measures prescribed by the World Health Organisation, WHO and the government to
fight against Coronavirus by the Executive Director of CHRDA Violet Fokum.
The Center
for Human Rights and Development in Africa CHRDA in collaboration with its
local partners, Investing in People Worldwide, IPW and Iya Foundation as well
as their international partners Femme Actantes based in France and Color of
Roses Foundation during the ceremony distributed 200 face masks, washing points
and vitamins to Internally Displaced Persons, Pregnant Women and Breastfeeding
Mothers in Bakingili.
According to
the Executive Director of CHRDA, Violet Fokum, the distribution is in the
context of the larger project of CHRDA for the prevention against Coronavirus
which is affecting the whole society.
She
disclosed that as a means to encourage people to boost their immune system, CHRDA
and its partners are out to help women take care of their sexual reproductive
health right.
As a result
of this one of CHRDA’s partner, Color of Roses Foundation sent the vitamins
which were distributed to the pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers especially
at this time of the COVID- 19 Pandemic to help boost their immune system and
protect them in the whole process of pregnancy and delivery.
According to
Violet Fokum, the washing points distributed to the Bakingili Community thanks
to Femme Actantes is to encourage them
to regularly wash their hands with soap which is one of preventive measures to
fight against the virus.
Besides the
distribution of health kits to the Bakingili Community, the Executive Director
of CHRDA, Violet Fokum, said the mission in the community is also to sensitise
the community on violence against women and to help them to put an end to same.
On her part
the representative of Iya Foundation, Marbel Mesape said the foundation is
involve in the fight against COVID-19 because
research has shown that it is also one the risk factor for kidney failure and
as a result they came to Bakingili to educate the population of Bakingili about
chronic kidney disease and also make them to know that COVID-19 is also a risk factor for kidney failure.
Investing in People Worldwide Cameroon, IPW,
Executive Director Ruth Besong Abunaw also used the opportunity to educate the
population of Bakingili on the preventive measures against the Coronavirus.
She
disclosed that they are in partnership with Iya Foundation and CHRDA to
mobilize communities and that they are out to distribute Vitamin A to pregnant
women and breastfeeding mothers and that besides that they have invested in Young People through capacity building and entrepreneurship
The Chief of
Bakingili, HRH Chief Joseph Elive urged the beneficiaries to make good use of
the items collected and to continue to respect the preventive measures against
Coronavirus prescribed by the government of Cameroon.
He also disclosed that besides the pandemic,
his community is also facing other challenges such as malaria and typhoid while
advising CHRDA and its partners to also visit other communities that are in
need of the items.
Since the
outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus in the country the Center for Human Rights
and Development in Africa CHRDA of CEO Barrister Felix Agbor Nkongho aka Balla
has been seriously engaged in the fight against the spread of the virus in the
country especially in local communities with the distribution of preventive
kits and they have promised to do more until the end of the pandemic in the
country.
The Center
also has a project of producing over 5000 Face Masks to be distributed to the
communities.
