International Women’s Peace Group Strengthens Women’s Collective Voices

On March 17 the International Women's Peace Group (IWPG, Chairwoman Hyun Sook Yoon), an NGO in special consultative status with UN ECOSOC, co-hosted a side event during the 66th UNCSW with the Ministry of Women, Family and Children of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire.

The theme of the event was “Strengthening Women’s Collective Voice, Leadership and Decision-Making: Peace Education for the Empowerment of Women.”There were eight speakers, including H.E. Nasseneba Toure, Minster of the Ministry of Women, Family and Children of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire; Chairwoman Hyun Sook Yoon of IWPG;H.E. Dr. Ergogie Tesfaye, Minister of the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia; H.E. Claudine Aoun Roukoz, President of the National Commission for Lebanese Women; H.E. Dr. Salma Al Nims, Secretary General of the Jordan National Commission for Women (JNCW); Judge Louise Otis, International Judge in Canada; Ms. Christina Turczyn, member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs of the United States and Ms. Keiso Matashane-Marite, Gender Affairs Officer of the Social Development Policy Division of the UN Economic Commission for Africa(ECA). UN ambassadors from each country and about 200 women from all over the world also attended.




At this event, the progress and challenges of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action(BPfA) on strengthening the voice, leadership and decision-making of women's groups through national strategic action plans were shared, as well as achievements on strengthening the role of women in conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Chairwoman Hyun Sook Yoonof IWPG, said, “Like the 4th goal of the UN SDGs, IWPG is working to help all women establish the right values through peace education. Peace education is essential to nurture peaceful citizens.”

H.E. Nasseneba Toure, Minster of the Ministry of Women, Family and Children of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire emphasized communication, saying, "It urges a synergy of actions to privilege dialogue in order to consolidate peace and preserve future generations from the scourge of war."

International Judge Louis Otis of Canada said, “Let’s keep in mind that women and children make up upwards of 80% of climate refugees. Whether we like it or not, we find ourselves in a conflict with our planet. We will have to redefine with humility how we live and what solidarity and sharing mean in ample measure.”


“Our mission is to promote social and economic transformational development in a comprehensive way, in particular to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls,” said Ms. Keiso Matashane-Marite, Gender Affairs Officer of the Social Development Policy Division of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

After the addresses, there was a question-and-answer session, and the delegates of participating countries expected that, as a result of this event, they could foster dialogue, build alliances, and strengthen partnerships to promote equal representation of women in all decision-making processes.

Dr Mrs. Agbor Meg Crowned "EKANDIM"
